15th Annual Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championship Sets Records On The Waves

Honolulu, HI (PRWEB) August 01, 2011

Sunday, July 31, 2011 produced favorable race conditions with 15 to 20-knot winds and eight foot swells. Athletes at the 15th Annual Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championship (M2O), presented by Longboard Island Lager took advantage by setting records in each division and class over the 32-mile crossing of the Kaiwi Channel also known as the Molokai Channel. A record sold out field competed on both prone and stand-up paddleboards.

View latest pre-race video in pane to right by Soul Surf Media – 72 hours to race day in anticipation of Mitchell’s 10-for-10.

Australias Jamie Mitchell won an unprecedented tenth consecutive world championship in a record time of 4 hours, 40 minutes, 31 seconds, beating his 2007 record (4:48:23) by eight minutes. The 34-year-old stood in victory on his 18-foot unlimited class paddleboard as he drifted across the finish line, pumping his hands to the sky before jumping in to Maunalua Bay

Its my fastest time, but it didnt feel like it, Mitchell said referring to the varying winds and currents. It feels great to set the record. Im not looking too far ahead, but this may be my last world championship on a traditional paddleboard. This is a great way to move on to a new challenge, but I just want to enjoy this feeling for a while.

Mitchells possible departure from the prone class leaves others to wonder if they could have ever beaten the 10-for-10 champion known as Mitcho.

Mitchell is a newlywed and will soon relax on his honeymoon.

As the finish line announcer yelled, Its Baxter time, the mens stand-up paddleboard (SUP) division welcomed a new, young champion in Connor Baxter. The 16-year-old from the island of Maui finished in 4:26: 10, taking down Dave Kalamas record time from 2010 (4:54:15) by nearly 30 minutes.

Baxters win didnt come without feeling of total exhaustion that is often experienced by the athletes who challenge the Molokai Channel.

I found the lucky line, Baxter said. When I turned down (in to the bay) I took the lead. Im stoked to be here and I cant wait to go lie down.”

A teenager also prevailed in the womens prone paddleboard division. In her first attempt at the Molokai Channel, Australian Jordan Mercer, 17, crushed the womens record set in 2004 (5:53:49) by Kanesa Duncan Seraphin by more than 30 minutes at 5:22:31. The humble champion described her record as a bonus, but was real about the enormity of the race.

To finish this race is such a mean feat in itself, said Mercer. I dont think I can describe how hard that was and I dont think anyone can prepare you for the pain that I just experienced.

Mercers father Darren has crossed the channel six times, but never on a board and never solo. He took pride in his daughters accomplishment of being the first in the family to successfully cross solo.

Both Baxter and Mercer are the youngest solo champions in M2O World Championship history.

Also joining the ranks with Mercer and Baxter is Haile Harrison, 16, winner of the stock SUP division with a time of 6:24:48. Haile is the youngest solo woman to make the crossing in event history.

Andrea Moller staged a repeat performance from 2010, finishing at the top of the womens SUP field in a time of 5:26:51. She beats her record of 6:00:00. The big wave surfer wanted to come back this year and enjoy competing in a record field of female racers.

I am proud of all these girls who are training so hard for this race it will only make the sport stronger, Moller said. Crossing the Molokai Channel is a dream.

Moller, 31, teared up when she was asked about her daughter and her thoughts about the youth of the sport.

Win or lose, I know I have a cute little daughter at home, Moller said. I know I am an example to her and her friends and it is motivating to be able to teach them a love for the ocean.

Eric Abbott, 24, from Oahu continued his dominance in the prone division on a stock board, winning in a time of 5:26:59.

Andrew Logreco, 26, also from Oahu won the mens stock SUP race for the second time in 5:13:45. He bests his 2010 time of 5:25:53.

The Cheapest Destinations in The World

Traveling is expensive.  Some places are much more expensive than others but there are still some pretty cheap destinations out there if you want to go somewhere different and a little more out of the way than some conventional destinations.  In this article, I will list the places that have been voted time and time again as the cheapest destinations on Earth.

Traveling is a luxury that many people cannot afford and the ones who can afford it, break the bank every time they take a vacation.  If you are a traveler or know any travelers, you know that traveling can be costly.  Airfare, hotels, food, activities, rental cars and fees for pretty much everything.  No matter what, any kind of travel is going to cost you a pretty penny but there are many places that are far cheaper than some of those run-of-the-mill destinations that you may be used to.  As long as you don’t mind giving up some luxuries and you don’t mind traveling to more far-flung locations, these destinations are where your hard-earned buck will get you the most:

Asia

Vietnam

China

India

Laos

Cambodia

Thailand

Malaysia

Africa

Morocco

Egypt

Tunisia

Europe

Bulgaria(one of Europe’s cheapest destinations)

Poland

Hungary

Romania

Turkey

Netherlands

CzechRepublic

Croatia

North America

Las Vegas

North Dakota

Eastern Canada

South America

Argentina

Bolivia

Ecuador

Chile

If you are on a budget and are looking for a cheap place to travel, stay away from:

New York

Paris

London

Chicago

Sardinia

Hawaii

Australia

New Zealand

Of course this is meant as just a guideline.  Different things can cause prices to fluctuate at different times.  These generally are the cheapest destinations but you may find deals for other destinations are usually quite pricey if you have the time and patience to search for these deals.  In order to maximize savings even to the cheapest destinations, you would need to also search for the lowest airfares.  The more flexible you are with your schedule and the less fussy you are about where you sit on the plane, the more you will save.  This list may change a bit with the changing world economy, so your best bet is to always do a lot of research before you book and before you go.

Waimea Bay is located on the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Waimea Bay became popular through the expansion of surf culture and surf music in the early 1960′s. It hosts big-wave surf competitions when large waves arrive during the Winter, created by ocean storms in the North Pacific. Waimea Bay was also one of the filming locations for the popular TV show ‘Lost’.

White Beach, Boracay, Phillippines

In 2007, Boracay island topped the list of the ‘World’s Most Popular Beach’ according to Yahoo! Travel. White Beach is the main tourist beach and has resorts and restaurants. The main part of the beach is separated from the hotels by a green zone of trees and vegatation, contributing to a more secluded feel.

Praslin, Seychelles

Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda

Horseshoe Bay has a beautiful wide beach with pink-tinted sand. It lies on the south of the island in Southampton. Bermuda in general has very fine beaches. The Maldives

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean made up of 26 atolls spread over 90,00 square kilometers. You can have your pick of hundreds of small tropical island beaches and any one would be a gem. I would vote for a beach in the Maldives as the place I would pick to be marooned just based on beach beauty alone.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora consists of an island with a lagoon and surrounding atoll that covers 11 square miles. It is primarily dependent on tourism for its livelihood. The signature feature of many of the resorts in Bora Bora are overwater bungalows on stilts.

Orient Bay, St. Martin

On the French or north side of the island of Saint Martin is Orient Bay with its long curving beach, said by many to be among one of the nicest in the Caribbean.  The south end of the beach is also one of the most popular nude beaches in the Caribbean.  If you are visiting, you may also want to visit Maho Beach on the south or Dutch side, where international flights pass feet overhead to land on the runway across the street.

What is Pearl Harbor?

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. marinebase located at Honolulu. Large parts of the harbor and the surrounding areas make up a U.S. marinebase, and it is headquarters for the U.S. Pacific fleet.

Before the attack:

Sunday 7. December 1941 at Pearl Harbor was the shocking attack that surprised many Americans. This was something they foresaw, and at least expected them.

The Japanese forces were under command of view – admiral Nagumo. The Japanese naval commander, Admiral Yamamoto, was behind the whole planning of the attack. Admiral gave the message, and 180 kilometers north of Oahu was Nagumo’s carriers localized, and with six carriers and 423 aircraft were to go to the attacks against Americans.

The first attack wave of relief from aircraft carrier in Japan kl. 6.00. It consisted of 183 aircraft, which was now on the way to the Atlantic fleet at Pearl Harbor. 7.14. Relieved the second wave of attack aircraft carrier in Japan, and it consisted of 163 aircraft.

What happened during the attack?

On Pearl Harbor around 7:03 discovered two radar operators of the radar base, that on Oahu, it was been localized Japanese aircraft. Ga operators with a message to the officer, he denied it and said it was the American B-17 aircraft that was expected from the West Coast. They saw more echo on the radar that would correspond to a large number of aircraft with the course to Hawaii.

On Pearl Harbor was not the crew prepared for what was to happen. Right officers, were based on incorrect information, and said that there was not any reason to believe that an attack was coming. Therefore, the aircraft wing close to the wing next to each other at airports, flak Kanonene was unattended, all ammunition was locked down, and no pass on, just as in peacetime. There were no torpedo net to protect the fleet, and since it was a Sunday morning, was the most døsige o calm.

1. wave attack

The attacking planes came from Japan in two waves. The first attack wave reached the fleet base 7.53/55. It consisted of 100 bombers, 43 destroyers and 40 torpedofly. The U.S. army believed this was their own aircraft and had no alarm. The first attack wave struck the blow against the ships and the airport.

The first wave of the 183 aircraft split up in three to attack from different sides. In a short time the Americans had lost 3 battleships. It was the “Arizona”, “West Virginia” and “Oklahoma”. 5 second battleships were damaged.

2. wave attack

The second attack wave reached Pearl Harbor 8:55. The second wave bombed ships and buildings. In two hours, almost the entire Pearl Harbor destroyed. By 9:55 it was over.

The Defense Ministry sent out a warning about need help, but they had to use regular telegraph since radio from Hawaii had been destroyed. The delays ended up with a notification that reached up to Pearl Harbor hours after the attack occurred, and then it was too late to get anything done. The Americans had lost.

Why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor?

Japan attack Pearl Harbor because the U.S. completed and halt the export of scrap metal and oil. This is due to the fact that Japan attacked and occupied several countries, along the North-China, Korea and throughout several neighboring states. United Kingdom and United States vulnerable to diplomatic pressure Japan, but Japan is not ga and joined the Axis powers, who at that time ruled over large parts of Europe and East – Asia.

But Japan was not to be stopped even when the Americans closed the Panama Canal to Japanese ships, and invaded northern Indochina. When the U.S. closed all of the export of oil. This was Japan Erne very vulnerable, because 80% of the oil came from the United States.

The objective of the attack:

The main goals of this operation was to reduce the big three U.S. aircraft carrier, “Lexington”, “Enterprise” and “Saragota”. This did not the Japanese aircraft and ships were not destroyed, for they were not in port. The largest fuel inventories also survived.

The only thing the Americans managed to do was to lower the six Japanese submarines that were in a separate operation outside Pearl Harbor. The attack on Pearl Harbor was not the only attack the Japanese did in the day. The attack also three different islands that were controlled by the United States. It was Wake Island, Midway Island and Guam.

The loss of the attack:

About 2,500 U.S. soldiers and civilians were killed during the attack, of which 1104 people died when a bomb struck the battleship at 750kg “Arizona”, and ammunition stockpiles blown the whole ship. The ship is still at the bottom and is a war memorial. A total of 18 ships sunk or damaged hard among them was the 5 warships and 188 aircraft were lost during the attack, 1,178 Americans were hard damaged.

In all there were 363 Japanese aircraft took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor, all the planes that had participated came back except for 29 pieces. The attack killed 100 during the Japanese, but the number of dying Americans who were the most shocking.

Japan Erne used suicide pilots, or as it is called, Kamikaze pilots. The planes were loaded with explosives and that was guided into the ship. Japan Erne seemed that there was an effective way to destroy the American ships. The attack lasted for two hours and then it was all over the United States had lost 349 planes, 3,700 men and 18 warships were either carved or hard damaged.

What happened after the attack?

Four days later Germany and Italy declared war against the United States in accordance with Tremaktspakten. This led the U.S. into two wars with Japan and in Europe.

What is the axis Pact?:

Axis is an alliance between Italy, Germany, Japan and several other countries during World War II. 27. September 1940 in Berlin, an agreement was signed between Germany, Italy and Japan. This agreement is called for tremaktspakten. The goal of it was to establish a new system in Europe and East – Asia.

Countries should give each other political, economic and military assistance and support. This if one of them was attacked by a foreign power that was not involved in the ongoing war in Europe, or the Chinese-Japanese War. Several nations that joined the Axis Powers early in the war, left the alliance later when the war luck changed

The making of atomic bomb (Manhattan Project):

USA avsa an unlimited number of money to this project and skulte about 2 billion for the government and people. There were several nuclear physicists and chemists working together, ultimately 200,000 people, but not many showed what they were working with. They made two types of bombs, one of plutonium, and another of uranium. Bomb that was based on uranium was as it was released over Hiroshima, and of plutonium over Nagasaki.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki:

Hiroshima:

The plane letter

At 02:45 the 6. August 1945. Relieved a B-29 bombers from the United States air force. They flew from the island of Tinian and out over the Pacific Ocean. The plane bombing was led by Colonel P. W. Tibb. Now they would get dropping the atomic bomb over Hiroshima. Bomb had greater destruction power than any other weapon before. The trip was 2400 km went just fine. At 06:30 Japanese time bomb was made clear.

The goal

Japan had almost no air defense at this time. Enola Gay, which Tibb had baptized the plane, flying towards their targets at a height of 9500 meters. At 08:14 gave Colonel Tibb crew orders to take on polaroid glasses were to protect the eyes. At 08:15 kunne B-29 aircraft to see his goal, which was the Aioi Bridge in Hiroshima middle. And a minute later the atomic bomb exploded in the air over the city.

Bomben

The first beacon was as clear as the sun itself. Heat wave killed thousands of people in less than a second. Those who were closest to the bomb or was evaporated to ash, and some after was only a shadow on a wall. Those who were farther away from the explosion was blinded by the sharp light and clothing melted fast to their body, and they were skin and hair burned them.

Bomb was followed by a shock wave that leveled buildings and houses to the ground. Trains, wagons and cars were thrown around like toys. And afterwards, there was strong winds that were to fire storms. There was a river that went through town. Some tried to jump out of this, but they drowned. No one knows the exact number of those who died, but at the end of 1945 said the authorities in Hiroshima that nearly 140,000 were dead by the immediate effects or later of radiation and burns.

Successful

When the U.S. President, Harry S. Truman was informed that the bombing had been successful, he said: “If they do not accept our conditions, they can expect a massive wave of destruction that they have never seen before”.

Nagasaki:

Three days after the bomb was dropped over Hiroshima relieved a new B-29 aircraft from the ground, this time packaged with a bomb based on plutonium. It was flown by major Charles Sweeney. Bomb was dropped over the city of Kokura.

The Bad Weather
When they arrived they had flown through Troptropical storms  and lightning. The city was covered by a thick layer of clouds, so instead of dropping the bomb over the city in the blind, set the place on Nagasaki, which was his second goal. In Nagasaki, there was also a dense layer of clouds, but since they had so much fuel left, he chose to drop the bomb in the blind over the city, for Sweeney could not wait. If they dropped it here, they had to do it over the ocean.

The Bomb

The Bomb exploded at 11:02 on 9 August 1945. And this was 2.5 km from the point that was originally intended to hit. Nagasaki is a city full of small rocks. They protected a bit of shock waves that came. The devastation was greatest in the valley it was released in, but the damage was still quite awful. about  35,000 people died, either in the explosion or shortly after on. Some believed that it was actually twice the number who died, that is about 70,000. The task was not as successful, but still it was a completely terrible effect.

Why the Americans out nuclear bombs?

- To get an immediate end to the war

- The United States was unsure of Japan and what they would do and when. Japan had no respect for their own citizens lives and planned to turn their entire island into a fortress.

- To force Japan to surrender without further fighting.

- Stresses were begun to build up in Europe between the Soviet Union and its Western allies

- According to some sources, Japan had a military force of over 9 million soldiers

- Because Japan would not put an end to the war.

Yank The Army Weekly: Famous World War II Magazine

Yank Began Publishing in 1942

Yank was founded by Major Hartzell Spence in May 1942. Established primarily to inform and entertain the men of the United States Army, Yank was staffed exclusively by enlisted men who served as the magazine’s editors, correspondents, photographers, cartoonists and illustrators. Many of Yank’s staff members were eminently qualified, having worked in civilian life for big city dailies, slick magazines and small town newspapers.

Vol. 1, No. 1 of Yank rolled off the presses bearing the cover date June 17, 1942, with the headline: “FDR: Why We Fight.” The magazine’s motto: “By the men…for the men in the service.”

Yank Produced 21 Editions

Yank was published in 21 editions in 17 locations. The magazine’s domestic edition was produced at their main editorial offices in New York City. Other Yank editions were published around the globe in such far-flung places as London, Honolulu, Sydney, Rome, Paris, Cairo, Tehran, Calcutta, Puerto Rico, The Aleutians, Panama and Strasbourg.

As the Allies advanced, so did the offices of Yank. The Paris edition made its first appearance in September 1944 and was printed on the same rotogravure press that the German Army newspaper, Wehrmacht, had been published on weeks before the Allied liberation.

Yank even published a small pony-sized air mail edition for use by American troops on some of the more remote islands of the Pacific.

Yank’s Outstanding War Reportage

Yank quickly established itself as one of the war’s premier magazines. Its outstanding war reportage was second to none, as witnessed by a vast array of first-hand, eyewitness battle accounts. Among the best entries: “Infantry Battle in New Georgia” by Sgt. Mack Moriss, “Blown Off the Deck of an LST” by Sgt. James P. O’Neill, “The Dead End Kids” (from Burma) by Sgt. Dave Richardson and “Cameraman in Cassino” by Sgt. George Aarons.

In one article, “Schweinfurt Raid,” Yank correspondent Sgt. Walter Peters not only accompanied the B-17 Yank on its perilous mission over the skies of Germany but manned a .50-caliber machine gun as well. Upon landing back at their bomber base in England, Peters cabled his stunning eyewitness account to Yank’s editorial offices.

“Our formation across the North Sea was perfect,” Peters wrote in describing the massive American raid. “We led the ‘Purple Heart’ elements, and in front of us the sky was literally clouded by B-17s. We counted as many as 190 and then quit counting.”

Several of Yank’s correspondents and photographers lost their lives while carrying out their hazardous assignments. Sgt. John A. Bushemi, one of Yank’s most talented photographers, was killed during the invasion of Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands. Likewise, Sgt. Peter Paris lost his life while storming bloody Omaha Beach with the U.S. First Infantry Division on D-Day.

Yank’s Cartoons, Humor, Pin-ups

In addition to its magnificent war reportage, Yank also contained a number of other features. The magazine’s cartoons were especially well-received, showcasing the talents of such GI contributors as Sgt. Ralph Stein, Sgt. Frank Brandt, Sgt. Al Jafee, Corporal Ernest Maxwell (a.k.a. Cpl. Emax), Private Thomas Flannery and Sgt. George Baker (creator of “The Sad Sack”).

Humorous articles also populated the pages of Yank. A few hilarious examples: “Invasion of Mae West’s Dressing Room” by Sgt. Al Hine, “A Dogface Answers a Collection Agency” by Pvt. Oris Turner and “Hopeless McGonigle’s Brother Wins the DSC” by S/Sgt. L.A. Brodsky.

One of the magazine’s most popular features was the Yank Pin-up Girl, which featured a bevy of beautiful starlets and models. Among the Hollywood famous were: Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Carole Landis, Betty Grable, Martha Vickers, Ann Miller, Dorothy Lamour and Lizabeth Scott.

Yank’s Famous Contributors

Yank could boast of a handful of GI contributors and staff members who later found fame in civilian life. Among the roster: Pfc. Irwin Shaw, acclaimed novelist and author of The Young Lions and Rich Man, Poor Man; Sgt. Marion Hargrove, author of the bestseller See Here, Private Hargrove; Sgt. Walter Bernstein, Hollywood screenwriter; Pfc. Bil Keane, creator of the popular cartoon strip The Family Circus; and Sgt. Merle Miller, bestselling author and motion picture writer.

Yank’s Final Edition in 1945

With an honorable discharge gracing its cover, Yank published its final edition on December 28, 1945. The war had ended three months earlier, and like an old soldier Yank merely faded away into history…

Yank Collector Editions

Yank, the Army Weekly is a favorite with magazine and militaria collectors. Most editions are valued in the $ 5-15 range, depending on cover subject, pin-up girl and condition. Some of the rarer pony-sized editions can sell for more.
