Radiometrics Corporation, a privately held company headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, has announced successful deployments of its MP-3000A microwave radiometer system for wind energy and utility load forecasting applications. Additionally, an MP-3000A recently deployed with the U.S. National Weather Service is providing crucial real-time weather data for aviation weather forecasting.
The MP-3000A is a passive microwave receiver system that provides continuous, real-time atmospheric measurements of temperature and water vapor up to 10 km height. This critical forecasting data was previously available only from twice-daily weather balloon launches at a limited number of locations (fewer than 100 in the United States). Utility companies are now using MP-3000A data to improve short-term energy demand forecasts, and wind stability prediction for wind turbine power generation. MP-3000A instruments deployed in Hawaii and most recently in the Los Angeles basin are expected to show a rapid return on investment.
Additionally, an MP-3000A deployed with the U.S. National Weather Service in Denver Colorado, is providing real-time weather information to the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). Staff meteorologists at the ARTCC monitor the continuous data from the MP-3000A, and use this information to fill in the gaps between twice-daily Denver weather balloon launches when generating short-term forecasts for the air traffic controllers.
Demand for the MP-3000A is expected to grow as businesses and government agencies reap the benefits of dramatically improved local moderate to high-impact weather prediction. In addition to energy load management and aviation weather, applications include severe weather forecasting, weather modification, air pollution monitoring and forecasting, and climate research.
