What to Take to the Beach in the Summer Heat

Going to the beach is an enjoyable activity, whether you are going by yourself, going with a friend or going with the entire family. The worst thing is to arrive at the beach and realize you’ve forgotten the necessary items you need. By planning ahead and knowing what you need for your time at the beach, you’ll have a great day.

The beach attracts many people. Some like to go for a swim to cool off. Some prefer to find a shaded spot and read a book and some even doze off. Children especially love to play in the sand and build sand castles. Whatever draws you to the beach, be sure to take what you need.

The most important items to take to the beach

* sunblock
* cooler
* bottled water and juice
* sunglasses
* brimmed hat, especially for children
* healthy snacks such as fruit
* life jackets
* disposable wipes for cleaning up
* hand sanitizer
* appropriate footwear
* towels
* swimwear
* cover up
* beach chair or blanket

Fun things to take to the beach

* plastic buckets and plastic shovels for building sandcastles
* a book or magazines if you like to read
* a Frisbee or beach ball
* portable stereo and cd’s
* deck of cards
* balloons for some water fights
* a camera

Since the rays of the sun are beating down on the beach, one of the most important items to take along is sunblock. Make sure you purchase the SPF that is appropriate for your skin and the time you will be in the sun. A sunburn isn’t pleasant and it’s very important to protect tender skin on children, especially. A brimmed hat will also help.

It’s important to drink plenty of fluids to keep from getting dehydrated. The summer heat and the beach can take its toll if you aren’t well-prepared. You sure don’t want to cut the day short by getting a heat stroke.

Wearing appropriate footwear can prevent your feet from getting burned. As cozy as the sand may feel on your feet, it can be way too hot for comfort.

Pack the important items to keep yourself and your children safe. Pack some extras to add to the fun and your day will be one you want to relive again and again.

Another tip: Print a list of what you need and like to take to the beach. Check it each time before heading to the beach so you don’t forget anything.

Five Free Things to Do In Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach, Florida is a great family vacation destination. It is less crowded than the better known Daytona Beach, or Saint Augustine. In fact, our family goes to the area two or three times a year for a long weekend. One might think that we would run out of places to go and things to do there, but we find the town to be relaxing, safe and family friendly. We have found these trips can be inexpensive and fun. In fact, here are five free things to do in Cocoa Beach!

Watch the Cruise Ships Leave.  Port Canaveral is on the way in to the city, and these huge structures are amazing to see, especially for kids. Everyday around four o’clock, a cruise ship sets sail.  By stopping at the park located in the port (where the public boat ramps are), the whole family can see these enormous ships and the tiny people on them. This a fine place to get ideas for future vacations

Check Out the Catch of the Day. After waving goodbye to the ships, there are several restaurants and charter fishing stands next to the park.  Those boats come in around five. We found this the first time we came, and never miss it. Take a look and see what was caught that day, and see how they are cleaned. Join the pelicans and other watchers who are interested in what’s happening. Last time we were there, squid, lobster, barracuda, and a shark were brought in.

Go to the Beach.  While this may seem obvious, Cocoa Beach has several great things going for it. There are great waves, and on many days, surfers can be watched as they ride them in. The beach, even on the Fourth of July is really not over crowded. That being said, arrive early to get good parking. Aircraft from two nearby Air Force bases are seen all along the coast. Kids will enjoy seeing the flying billboards and seeing the shipping traffic.

Window Shop. Cocoa beach is the Home to the famous Ron Jon’s surf shop, while next door is the Cocoa Beach Surf Company. Both are neat places to check out surf boards, a shark tank, and all sorts of touristy goodness. Around the corner from these places is The Dinosaur Store. This place has tons of fossils and casts of every boy’s favorite animal. Additional shopping is to be found all over, and a mall, Merritt Square is ten minutes away.

Watch a Rocket Launch. This area of Florida is known as “The Space Coast”.  This place has great places to watch a rocket or the space shuttle take off into space. After checking with the online launch schedule, head to the park at the Port Canaveral, or back to the beach. From there, look north. Once the launch happens, you can see the flame and smoke very clearly. Then the booming sound comes. It is thrilling and exciting sight to see.

A short vacation in Cocoa Beach can be as enjoyable as you make it. These tips cost nothing, and become the basis for family stories you and your children will remember for years. Even if your family has been before, these suggestions have value for several returns. So, take some time and go do it!

Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach is named in honor of Luther Halland who was its founder. Halland was working for Henry Flagler during the late 19th century and was asked to go to Florida and create a settlement near a town known as Dania Beach.

In 1900 Halland and a small group of hardy, adventurous souls put down roots in a coastal community that would become Hallandale Beach.

The warm weather, swaying palm trees, crisp ocean breezes and sandy shoreline made this beachfront city a popular site for residents as well as tourists. Today Hallandale Beach is home to more than 30,000 people and in the winter months the population swells to 40,000+.

Tourists visit the city throughout the year as there is always something interesting to do, see or explore. Many of the vacationing visitors and “snowbirds” who flock to this area come from the northern US and Canada.

After all this is the perfect place to be when you want to avoid winter’s cold temperatures and bitter winds. Wintertime in Florida is an extremely pleasant experience with sunny skies and warm weather.

With an enviable location that borders the Atlantic Ocean, Hallandale Beach is a prime place for those who want to try their hand at diving, swimming or surfing. Kayaks, canoes and sailboats are all available for rent in the area and instructors will provide you with the help you need to feel at home on the water.

Golfing is a big draw in the city and this Florida site is proud of the courses that are available. Thanks to the temperate weather conditions it is not unusual to find a number of avid golfers enjoying the game throughout the fall and winter months.

Hallandale Beach is also where you can find the Mardi Gras Gaming and greyhound racing track.

Gulf Stream Park horse racing is also held at this location 6 months a year. These activities attract large crowds of people and are a favorite stop for vacationing tourists.

When you visit Hallandale Beach you will be able to enjoy shopping at many local boutiques and craft shops. In addition to these smaller businesses the city offers larger shopping venues such as Diplomat Mall and Fashion Row. You will be able to find a wide variety of clothing and merchandise, from beachwear to high fashion couture, when you come to Florida’s southeastern coast.

This friendly, Florida destination welcomes thousands of visitors every year and you could become one of them.

The Beaches of the Caribbean

CARIBBEAN BEACHES

The first thing the word ‘Caribbean brings to mind is a white sand beach fringed by waving coconut palms. Yet many Caribbean islands have dark sand beaches, many being relative, since one may say that compared to the Pacific islands, there are not many Caribbean islands. However, be that as it may, some of the most glorious white sand beaches are located in the Caribbean.

Anguilla, Saint Martin and Saint Barths are all ringed by white sand and have all three been ‘discovered’ for their beaches. Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados are also well-endowed in that domain, as are the Virgin Islands, both British and American and last but not least the Grenadines, which used to be Princess Margaret of Britain’s playground.

This short piece will stay with the small islands of the Eastern Caribbean and not include the Greater Antilles, so even though Puerto Rico is close, it will not be included.

Those islands already looked at are all small, Barbados being the largest, the best developed and still only 166 square miles in size.

The others, those forming the “inner arc” of the Eastern Caribbean are mostly volcanic, and have both dark and golden sand. Let’s take them as they come, from North to South. Tiny Saba, just five square miles is the first, with no beaches, but with some world-class diving. Then there’s Saint Eustatius, eight square miles with as few golden beaches and which is the first foreign country to have saluted the brand-new United States flag back in the eighteenth century.

Saint Kitts, officially Saint Christopher, was the “Mother Colony of the West Indies”. It has golden beaches and dark almost black sand beaches. Its sister in the Federation, Nevis, right door two miles away at the closest point, has golden beaches and warm water baths. Montserrat is still under the influence of an active volcano, and beaches are in short supply there.

Guadeloupe, the biggest of these small islands, and really made up of two islands, has it all. Dominica, the ‘Nature Island’, is more river than beach. Martinique is also well developed and has some golden beaches. Saint Lucia has some of the most magnificent scenery in the world, as well as its beaches.

Saint Vincent also has a volcano that erupted thirty years ago, so does not have much in the beach scheme of things. However, next door Grenada does, as does Tortola. Last but not least is Trinidad, which has some golden beaches and glorious jungle.

Active Travel

There seems to be a whole vocabulary for those who sell travel. Active travel, adventure travel, leisure travel, eco-tourism. Do you really need to know what it all means? Not really. In the grand scheme of things you define your own travel style, and it may change from day to day.

You may go to an island and choose to sit on the beach one day, and go scuba diving the next. You may spend a day in the spa that resort has down in a palm grove and go bike riding the next. You’re active one day and quiet as a slug the next.

But if you are signing up for a tour, you should find out what that particular tour operator means when they say active travel. In general, an active tour will focus more on travel and transportation that requires physical activity… walking or cycling as opposed to riding along in a van or bus.

Most tours that fall into this category have a lot of outdoor activities.

OK, you say, but you can do a lot of walking if you’re sightseeing in a big city.

You’re right, even museum tours or garden tours can give you a workout, but active travel sort of indicates that you will be outdoors and biking or hiking or rafting or even horseback riding.

Some companies spell it out for you pretty well… they’ll tell you the activity level that will be required for the whole tour…

Will there be a lot of hiking or walking? For how many hours or how many miles or kilometers. Will there be lots of stairs or hills to climb? They may even have a “scoring” system all the way from easy to difficult… of course, you need to know what their definition of easy is!

A trekking company, for instance, might say Level One, or Easy is 3-5 hours of walking up to six miles a day with low altitude…. While Level Four or Strenuous is 5-8 hours of hiking in mountainous terrain at higher elevations.

Will you be staying in hotels? Or mountain huts where you share a bunkhouse arrangement with other travelers? Or will you be camping…. sleeping in tents? Your tour operator should give you an idea of the type of accommodations you can expect from rugged or spartan to luxury. You could be going on an African safari in the middle of the Kalahari, but if you stayed in a tent at Jack’s Camp, you would definitely find yourself reveling in the luxury category… and still be active in your travels.

You may even find that you relieve more “workaday” anxieties and frustrations with active vacations than you would just sitting on the beach, eating and drinking the night away. Activity is good for you, and sometimes it leaves you just a little tired and more relaxed at the end of the day.

Brochures may use the terms active or adventure travel interchangeably. We think of adventure travel as a little more of a reach…. something that is more apt to get you a little out of your comfort zone. Active travel doesn’t necessarily do that…. but it may make you break a sweat.

And what’s wrong with that?
