Salt Lake Community College will host the 4th Annual Regional Undergraduate Student Philosophical Conference on Friday, November 11. The Legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche: The Integration of Philosophy & Art will be the theme. The conference will feature both an academic and an artistic session.
The academic session will feature Keynote Speaker Dr. Charlie Huenemann, Philosophy Professor and Associate Dean at Utah State University. This session will run from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Student Center Oak Room at SLCC’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
The Session will be started by greetings from SLCC Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dr. John McCormick, and online greeting in real-time from Chair of the Moral Philosophy Department of Radboud University in Nijmegen (Netherlands), Professor Paul Van Tongeren.
Following the Plenary Session, students from SLCC, the University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State, UVU, BYU, Westminster College, as well as John Hopkins University, Kaua’i Community College (Hawaii), the Radboud University in Nijmegen, will discuss the Philosophy of Nietzsche at Student Panels.
The Session is dedicated to the moral, social, and political aspects of Nietzsches thought, with a particular focus on the Dionysian Nature of Western Art, and the Creative Artistic Genius of the Authentic Western Philosopher.
Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon will offer a greeting for the conferences artistic session, which will be held on November 11 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Grand Theatre. Following Mayor Corroons welcome, SLCC Provost Dr. Chris Picard will provide remarks. Maestro Adam Sklute, Artistic Director of Ballet West, will provide this sessions Keynote address.
With assistance from Ballet Wests dance troupe, Sklute will elaborate his avant-garde balletic vision, inspired by Nietzsches philosophy and by the work of Igor Stravinsky and George Balanchine. Following Director Sklute’s remarks, an artistic program will be held.
This extra-ordinary combination & organic integration of Neitzsche’s pure philosophy with its sophisticated, ‘high culture’ artistic expression makes this Conference an absolutely unique, unprecedented, international-scale intellectual event, said SLCC Philosophy Professor Alexander Izrailevsky. This student philosophical conference will enormously benefit the academic aspirations of SLCC students, students of other Colleges and Universities, and the broader community.
The Conference will be free and open to the public.
The Conference has received funding from Utah Humanities Council. The Utah Humanities Council promotes understanding of diverse traditions, values, and ideas through informed public discussion.
